Stephen Walker FCA

After 30 years serving the Derby business community Shapcotts Accountants is expanding again with the appointment of a new senior Client Relationship and Accounts Manager. Qualified Chartered Accountant Stephen Walker (48) joins Shapcotts after 12 years as Finance Director at the Derbyshire-based logistics firm Lockwood Group. The newly created post will see Stephen lead the Accounts and Tax Team at the firm’s Derby office and balance his new role with his varied out of hours pastimes that include ten years as a junior football coach with Hilton Harriers FC, 5-a-side football, cycling and as the drummer in jazz band, Dove Valley Jazz.
Shapcotts Accountants Founder and Managing Director Melvin Shapcott comments:

“For three decades, we have been helping the Derby business community to succeed and to do this to an exceptional standard we need the most qualified, experienced and ethical staff in the marketplace. Stephen, along with the rest of our 18-strong team, fits our stringent employee requirements and we are thrilled that Stephen has chosen to join the Shapcotts family.

“Stephen’s extensive business experience as a Financial Director for a diverse group of companies, combined with his accounting background and qualifications, illustrates that at Shapcotts we have first-hand knowledge of how businesses operate and the challenges they face in the marketplace daily.

“Many accountants, including Shapcotts, can offer expertise in the accounting field, however, many of our senior staff have a proven track record of real world business success, something which is often a necessary requirement to advise on complex financial decision-making and enables our advice to clients to stand out from the competition.”

New recruit Stephen achieved his first Finance Director position at 36, having previously gained his Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) status in 2005 and spent 15 years in accounting practice. Stephen is looking forward to his new challenge. Stephen says:

“I have been really impressed with Shapcotts professionalism, progressive vision, commitment to its clients and continued growth. I am excited to be returning to practice again – particularly because I will be able to utilise my previous business experience and develop my role over time. I am looking forward to meeting our clients and exceeding their expectations.”

Mickleover-born Stephen has been married for nearly 20 years, has three teenage children and, together with his father and son, is a Derby County season ticket holder. Stephen notes:

“Family and community are very important to me and Shapcotts shares the same values. Its ethos is to help clients to succeed, support its local community and treat its staff like family. Combine this with its team’s hard-working, honest work ethic and Shapcotts has the recipe for success – I’m proud to be a part of it.”

James Payne - finance and IT manager at BSP Consulting

East Midlands civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting has promoted James Payne to the position of finance and IT manager.

He has been with the company for exactly 16 years, having joined BSP straight from school in August 2001.

James has recently been instrumental in introducing a new project information management system at BSP’s headquarters in Nottingham and across its offices in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield.

The Union Square software is used worldwide by organisations in the construction sector to help them work smarter and collaborate more effectively, and it has already begun showing positive results for BSP.

BSP managing director David Sumner said: “James has been a loyal and valued BSP employee since joining us in 2001. He has recently spearheaded the introduction of Union Square across the business after putting forward the case to the senior team of the benefits of integrating and streamlining our management of information – something which has become increasingly important to the efficiency of the business as we continue to expand.

“We have a commitment to staff development and are delighted to have promoted James to this newly created position at BSP Consulting, which reflects his new role.”

The Union Square system is being used throughout the business, primarily for project accounting but also for internal processes such as HR.

“Union Square has only been in place for a short while but already it is bringing benefits to BSP in making our project accounting more efficient,” said James. “The prediction is that it will help us with our long-term forecasting and planning, and become an increasingly valuable tool in the future.”

James joined BSP as a civil engineering technician at the age of 16, before becoming civil engineering technician and IT manager in 2004 and subsequently IT manager. He is based in BSP’s Nottingham HQ in Oxford Street but works across the group.

BSP, which also has offices at Pride Park, Derby, De Montfort Street, Leicester, and Solly Street, Sheffield, provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services in civil, structural, geotechnical, transportation and environmental engineering to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents. It was founded in 1999 and operates across the UK, working in sectors including education, industrial, commercial, retail, affordable housing, older persons living, leisure, private housing, heritage, and pre-planning.
